AI SKILLS IN JOB POSTINGS

AI Job Posting Share (% of Total): — as of latest available, and holding steady. Source: Indeed / LinkedIn Jobs Data.

This indicator is deferred pending a free public data source for AI job posting trends — Indeed and LinkedIn currently require commercial partnerships.

The share of job postings that explicitly list AI skills is one of the cleanest signals of how fast employers are rewriting job descriptions around machine work. Indeed Hiring Lab and LinkedIn Economic Graph both publish this series internally, but neither exposes it through a free public API. Commercial partnerships run into five figures annually, which falls outside American Default's free, nonpartisan access model.

Where the data is visible, it tells a consistent story. Indeed Hiring Lab has reported that the share of U.S. postings mentioning generative AI roughly doubled year-over-year in 2024 and again in 2025. The absolute share is still small, but the slope is steep, and the growth is concentrated in the same roles showing softness elsewhere — software development, marketing, analytics, administrative support.

In the meantime, the mechanism this indicator would measure shows up indirectly in the indicators we can see. The Tech Drought shows information-sector job openings falling sharply off their 2025 highs. The AI Cut shows Challenger job-cut announcements that explicitly cite AI. The Horizon tracks the capability side — how long a task AI can now complete autonomously.

American Default will wire this indicator in when a free public source becomes available. Until then, the surrounding series do most of the work this one would do.
